My father introduced me to Langston Hughes when I was a boy of 10 or 11. He had a copy of "Simple Speaks His Mind," a collection of vignettes about Jesse B. Semple. I enjoyed listening to these stories. These tales gave me insights into issues of race relations and discrimination. I was 11 when Dr. King was assassinated, so I wanted to know about such issues. As a teacher, I enjoy teaching Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun." As a precursor to that play, I always begin by discussing Hughes' poem "Harlem."
What a treasure to receive that copy at such a young age and to wish to know more. Kudos to you for being motivated Anthony and inspired by those readings. What a blessing...it appears that those early years of yearning for learning has taken you to the noblest profession:) - Kudos to you for Inspiring those to Aspire! (I, am also an educator by profession)- Hughes is certainly a great place for the wheels to turn.....
